Legs in the air, butterflies in my stomach and I’m giggling like a middle school girl.

It’s Movie Monday again!. This is The Eclipse BL Series Review. We’ll explore what sets it apart in the world of LGBTQ+ dramas. We’ll take a closer look at the characters, their chemistry, and the impact of this series.

Plot Summary:

“The Eclipse” is a 2022 Asian LGBTQ+ drama adapted from the Thai novel “Eclipse” by Prapt, a young Thai writer. The story revolves around an uprising at Suppalo All-Boys High School, a prestigious institution governed by strict rules. As a solar eclipse approaches, rumours spread of a curse that will punish students who defy the school’s authority.

Amidst these rules, a group known as “The World Remembers” emerges to challenge the school’s administration and fight for their rights. Ayan, a new student from a rival school, and Akk, the president of the prefects club, find themselves on opposing sides. Ayan’s arrival raises suspicion, and his quest to uncover the truth behind his uncle’s suicide intertwines with the school’s turmoil.

Ayan only enrolled in Suppalo High School in hopes of discovering the person who pushed his uncle Dika to suicide. His single lead to Suppalo School is his uncle’s old notebook. Ayan’s method of dealing with Akk’s continuous scrutiny is to toy with him while we the audience question where the game ends for Ayan and where his love began.

Review:

“The Eclipse” is a blend of youth, mystery, and romance that captivated me from the start. The LGBTQ+ representation, though not the central theme, authentically portrayed the challenges faced by the community.

The chemistry among the characters, especially Ayan and Akk, was a highlight. Their character development was well-paced, and the interactions felt natural and relatable. Unlike some BL series, the friendships here exuded authenticity and chemistry.

The storyline, focusing on the school’s curse and the mystery surrounding Ayan’s uncle, offered a refreshing change from the typical university-based BL series. However, there were some plot holes and rushed storytelling in later episodes.

One aspect that stood out was the emotional depth conveyed by the actors, particularly Khaotung and First. The series left me eagerly awaiting each episode.

While I enjoyed the series thoroughly, I noticed a lot of plot holes that could have been done better. For example, through the series, because of how they portrayed the incident, I was under the impression that Ayan was the last person his uncle Dika saw before he committed suicide. But in episode 11, they came up with a whole new narrative that it was Teacher Chadok instead who witnessed Uncle Dika’s death. This will be explained further in the spoilers section.

Despite its flaws, “The Eclipse” is an underrated BL series that deserves recognition. It’s 4 out of 5 stars from me due to its plot holes and pacing issues. If you enjoyed “Bad Buddy,” this series is a must-watch.

Spoilers:

In this section, we delve into major spoilers, so if you haven’t watched the series, watch it first and return to join the conversation. For those okay with spoilers, read on.

We’ve explored Ayan and Akk’s story, but let’s discuss the mystery surrounding Ayan’s uncle’s death. The series introduced a narrative twist regarding the witness to the suicide, which left some questions unanswered.

Episode 11 appeared rushed, compressing drama that deserved more screen time. It lacked resolution for character conflicts, and the transition from romance to suspense felt abrupt.

The series also leaves us wondering when Ayan’s feelings for Akk truly developed. It’s an element that could have been explored in more depth.

Despite these narrative nuances, I thoroughly enjoyed watching this series, and I’d like to highlight some of the best moments in The Eclipse from my viewing experience and my thoughts about them.

The kiss between Thuaphu and Khanlong at the end of episode 7

I must make an honourable mention here — this was a particular moment that gave me goosebumps. The atmosphere, the lighting, the palpable tension, and the deliberate, slow unfolding of events. If you’ve watched this series, I’m certain you felt it too.

Thua and Khanlong’s side story added significant depth to the series, and I’ve always relished the presence of side couples in a BL series. It somehow feels incomplete without them. To add the cherry on top, the side couple in this series is Neo and Louis, and their chemistry is undeniably adorable.

Following episode 7, Khanlong’s decision to deny the kiss left me with mixed feelings. While it would be easy to feel frustrated with Khanlong for brushing off the passionate kiss he shared with Thuaphu the night before, it’s important to remember that Khanlong himself was still grappling with his emotions and working towards coming to terms with the situation. Emotions were understandably complex, and the series did a commendable job of portraying the intricacies of these relationships.

👉I have so much more to talk about concerning Akk and Ayan’s story so read my full review below to join the conversation.

Conclusion:

“The Eclipse” is a compelling BL series that brings together mystery, romance, and youth themes. While it has its flaws, it offers a unique storyline and authentic character chemistry. Don’t miss this underrated gem in the BL genre.
